Civil engineering undergraduates from UEL built scaled-down structures of landmarks on the Olympic site

ENGINEERING students worked with Olympics contractors to build structures on the 2012 site.

More than 80 third year civil engineering graduates from four universities, including the University of East London (UEL) completed challenges set by the Olympic Delivery Authority.

The students planned and built scaled down versions of structures including Barcelona Tower, Kingsgate Bridge in Durham, the Millennium Gallry in Sheffield and Brewery Wharf footbridge in Leeds.

A UEL spokeswoman said the project, called Constructionarium was designed to provide students with practical experience of delivering projects, The UEL students worked on the Kingsgate Bridge structure.

Mike Hurst, UEL civil engineering lecturer said: “I’m delighted that our students had the opportunity to take part in this challenge.

They all worked extremely hard and successfully completed the construction of the bridge with time to spare.

“This is a real achievement for them and shows the high level of skills and expertise they have gained during their time at UEL.”

Student Anila Smajlaj, who took on the role of joint project manager, said: “This project was a great learning experience.

“Working on the Olympic site meant that the construction standards were really high and we became really aware of health and safety.”
