Walthamstow Library marks its 100-year anniversary with celebrations

A CELEBRATION took place today to mark the 100th birthday of Walthamstow Library.

The library opened on its current site in the High Street in July 1909, after local benefactor Andrew Carnegie gave £10,000 for a new building and a new library.

The library replaced Rosebank, the building that had become too small for the ever-expanding library service.

At the library this morning, students from the William Morris School Gospel Choir performed songs to guests and a special commemorative cake was cut.

Pupils from Hillyfield Primary School in Higham Hill Road, Wlathamstow, also joined the celebration.

Head of libraries, museum and gallery, Lorna Lee said: “This shows how libraries have been a way of life for the last 100 years and how it has transformed over the years to become part of the community.”

High Street ward councillor James O'Rourke said: “This is where I came as a child to study for my O'levels upstairs.

“It is nice to see it refurbished. Other London boroughs have built purpose-built libraries but Andrew Carnegie gave us this and we owe it to him to keep it.”

Walthamstow library was damaged by a fire in 1982, but survived and was refurbished in 2007.

A family party to celebrate the library’s birthday is also being held at the library on Saturday, July 11, from 10am to 4.30pm.

There will be story time, Dotty the Clown, badge making, craft workshops, face-painting and other activities.

Did Cllr O'Rourke ask Mrs Lee why she did nothing about the dozen leaks which severely damaged this fine building for a whole year after the builders handed it over before anything was done? Did he ask the cause of the fire which caused the Library to be closed for large parts of last year, and then redecorated? Did he ask her how much we have had to pay out to fix both of thses avoidable fiascos? Did he ask where all the old book stock went? Did he ask why it cost LBWF £50,000 to pay an outside consultant to select library books (that's just to choose them, not to buy them!), while we're paying £60,000 for an unqualified libraries manager? Did he ask how she was promoted four grades into this post without any other candidate being considered? Did he ask why staff were suspended or otherwise bullied into silence when they raised concerns?Does he expect to go into the next election blaming Labour for all the abuses his party has tamely gone along with?

Here here mdj.

The councils decision to keep the library in this fine building has been overshadowed by the missing/reduced book supply and inadequate post-refurbishment maintenance - even the fish tank wasn't looked after! With St James St library unlikely to return, it's even more important that this beautiful building is properly stocked and maintained.

Why is Mr Carnegie described as a 'local' benefactor? He was a great benefactor, to be sure, but surely not a local?

We deserve answers to the questions raised by MDJ.

And what does Lorna Lee mean by her strange comment that the library "has transformed over the years to become part of the community"? That it wasn't "part of the community" when it used to be full of books and people reading?

The main change Mrs Lee has made to our libraries is to throw out thousands of books. And because the books have gone, so have most of the readers.
