Redbridge Homes tenants are demanding that the council act upon a Government scheme and build more low-cost housing

REDBRIDGE Homes tenants have called upon the council to take advantage of a new Government scheme and replace their crumbling homes.

An initiative has just been announced to kick start affordable housing by allowing local authorities to retain council rents from and receipts from right-to-buy purchasers, rather than the money going to the Treasury.

And embattled tenants are demanding Redbridge seize the opportunity to build more low-cost homes.

However, essential improvement works to exisitng properties have just been cancelled as Redbridge Homes missed out on a £39million windfall by failing to get two stars on their Audit Commission report last month.

Louise Ferguson, 28, of Ray Lodge Road, Woodford Green, has had vital repair works to her kitchen and bathroom had just been cancelled.

The mum-of-two said: “There's massive overcrowding on this estate and there are just not enough council houses around.

“My bathroom is horrible as the tiles are falling off and the bath moves. This area is a nice place to live but the standard of housing is terrible.”

Redbridge currently has the lowest council housing stock of any London borough.

And according to data from the Department for Communities and Local Government, between 2004 and 2008 the number of households in the borough on waiting lists for transfers rose from 4,766 to 13,188, with 13.9 per cent of all families holding out for different properties.

Lucy Davies, also of Ray Lodge Road, lives with her four young children in a cramped two-bedroom apartment.

The 27-year-old said: “There is just no chance of being rehoused at the moment and we have been waiting for ever. I don't think that housing is a priority at all for the council at all.”

A Redbridge Council spokeswoman said: "The council recognises the need for affordable housing and has an affordable housing strategy.

"We are carefully examining the recent broad proposals put forward by the government in respect of council new build and once we see the more detailed information from the Government we’ll be able to consider the options more closely.”

Excuse me, but I am missing something here? I'm not sure that if I was living in a 2 bedroomed council flat, I'd go ahead and produce 4 children!!!

Well I am a parent of one 'which should please Gus' and I was we were promised new kitchens by the end of this year to no avail, I would like to point out firstly that in April I was told by a council worker that the money had been put aside and that they were waiting for the right contractors, or the cheapest I guess. And also I cant understand why if the council are so short on cash they are funding a revamp of George Lane High Street, which is going to cost tens of thousands. My Kitchen is falling to pieces and has sharp edges that has cut the skin near my childs eye open and has cause many other small but significant injuries.
Also id like to point out to Gus who sounds like a complete bigott that not all us council estate residents are on the dole and sponge of the stait, most uf us do acctually work and pay our council tax and so yes I have the right to have a dame good moan. And as for Gus's comment about the above lady, Life is not as black and white as to say why produce four kids in a two bedroom flat, Maybe she had some of them before and even if not what are you suggesting the solution should be? I guess you think only the rich have the right to reproduce.

The rich do have the right because they can afford to. It seems though that the rich produce 2.4 children as they are sensible not to bring kids into a world of hardship and poverty.

People who claim to be poor seem to churn out kids without any thought as to their living conditions. They add cats, dogs, budgies gerbils and rabbits to add to the mayhem then claim they are overcrowded and expect the council to provide a 'home and gardens' mansion. Those days are long gone.

I'm with Gus and Fresh Gravee on this one.
At a time when there are quite clearly too many people on the planet already, it's selfish for anyone to have 4 children, let alone someone who expects the state (ie us taxpayers) to pick up the tab.
People like this woman should be grateful to have subsidised housing in the first place, rather than expecting to be rewarded for producing too many children with a larger home.

QMG - South Woodford's purpose-built slum. It resembles modern prison buildings.

What really annoys me is that people who are lucky enough to have a roof over their head moan. I'm sorry there are people in this country who are homeless and would be grateful to have a home. In regards to tiles falling of the wall in the bathroom, why can't you repair them yourself, your allowed to do up you council home, but no you expect it to be paid for you and to maon about having four kids in a two bedroom place count yourself lucky your children have somewhere to lay their heads at night.
