THE COLOURFUL history of one of Wanstead's most treasured wooded areas has been celebrated with a fun packed summer fair.

Hundreds of visitors turned up for an afternoon of fun at the Tarzy Wood Community Day in Wanstead High Street, where attractions included henna painting, food stalls, Victorian-style swings and music provided by the Woodbine Steel Band.

The free annual event was launched in 2003 and is held to commemorate the saving of the wood from property development more than 100 years ago.

The wood's 19th century owner had attempted to enclose it with a tar fence so that he could build on the site, only to see the structure pulled down by angry Wanstead residents who were determined to keep it open for public use.

Epping Forest keeper, Ian Greer, who helped organise the day said: “This was an important event in local history so we were glad to see lots of people coming along to have a good time.

"This area is defined by its proximity to Epping Forest, so it was nice for people to be able to involve themselves in a celebration like this."

All money raised at this year’s event will be donated to Haven House Children’s Hospice in Woodford Green.
