A LEAKING toilet could pose a health risk and has caused fungus to grow in a Leyton flat, residents claim.

Dawn Gilling, 35, a part-time care worker and a Family Mosaic tenant of Overton Road, said the toilet in her home has been leaking into the flat below for more than a week.

She said: “My toilet flushes on its own. All the waste goes down into their flat and my bathroom's above their kitchen.

“It's causing a health problem.”

She added that workmen had visited the property and spent the day there but failed to fix the problem.

Miss Gilling said: “They've knocked my tiles out and they've ripped my lino but nothing's getting done.”

She lives with her nine-year-old son and said she now fears for his safety.

“He's got learning difficulties – what if he put his hand in the mess?” she said.

“I feel like we've been left in limbo.”

Miss Gilling also said she had been told workmen could not visit the property again before August 5.

Neighbour Paul Burke, 40, who is disabled and lives with his 78-year-old mother added: “It's been coming down into my kitchen – I've got to cook there.

“There are big wet patches and fungus has started growing.”

Mr Burke also claims workmen removed the covering from the pipes in the kitchen and left them exposed.

But a spokeswoman for Family Mosaic said: "The tenant and her neighbour called on July 15 and a contractor attended and resolved the leak that day.

"It was apparent at the time of repairing the leak that making good works would need to be carried out and an appointment has been made to do so.

"This is the first we have heard of the leak continuing and our repairs contractors are attempting to make contact with both residents to ensure the issue is resolved to their satisfaction as soon as possible."
