PLANS for a brand new primary school could be shelved after concerns were raised about the lack of space at the site.

Proposals for a school in Gresham Drive, Chadwell Heath were turned down by cabinet in April because of fears over the small size of the location and increased traffic problems in the area.

Council officers have since carried out a survey of the site, which agreed that it would not be big enough to provide adequate play space for youngsters.

The findings come as a blow for the council as it battles to provide enough primary places to meet burgeoning demand.

The report will be discussed at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday next week.

Cllr Gary Monro, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said, ""As part of our borough-wide approach to providing school places we are continuously looking for new sites that meet government regulations for schools.

“Unfortunately the Chadwell Centre, for numerous reasons, does not provide adequate facilities for a primary school.

"In the meantime we are working on expanding existing schools and will investigate various other possible schemes for increasing the number of school places available in Redbridge."
