ANGRY traders will join forces tomorrow after it was revealed that Redbridge Council intend to use CCTV cameras to generate money from people committing parking offences.

Shopkeepers in George Lane, South Woodford, will come together in a show of solidarity claiming that the policy will drive business away.

After numerous denials and claims that they would only be used for security reasons, Redbridge Council finally admitted to the Guardian this week that the nine new CCTV cameras will also be used to catch motorists flouting parking rules.

Amir Rasool from the Woodford Business Centre said: “Traffic wardens are hot on people's cases here anyway and it just seems like a way to generate more income.

“There's not really any crime here so I don't know why they're doing it.

“I will be there tomorrow for sure.”

John Raine from David Anthony's shoes said: “We really don't want it as it will drive everyone away.

“It will put people off even coming to the area. I have to park 20 minutes away as it is to get to work.”

Joe Federico of the Little Woodford Café said: “It's absolutely outrageous what the council have done and very disappointing that they tried to keep it from us.

“The motive is obviously money but I just don't understand why they want to take business away from the street.

“It's going to take a lot to stop them but we can try.”

Fethi Nam, owner of the newly opened Wood Oven kebab shop, said: “It will affect us as not only do our customers park up quickly to grab some food, we won't be able to take in deliveries either.

“We will be there tomorrow.”

If you would also like to oppose the plans and join the traders they will be outside Barclay's Bank in George Lane, at 10.30am tomorrow (Wednesday).

Installation of the cameras is planned for the beginning of August.
