A MACHINE to be used during random drug testing will be launched tomorrow.

The 'Itemiser' machine will be launched at an event tomorrow which will mark the start of a partnership between the council and police to carry out random checks for drugs.

The machine will be used by licensing officers during random checks of pubs, nightclubs and restaurants.

Swabs are taken and are then fed into the machine to detect drugs on any surface, including ones which have been wiped clean to avoid discovery.

The Itemiser will be swept over tables, chairs and surfaces and if drugs are detected, the council will decide whether to haul the culprit before the council's licensing committee.
