A MAN who was shot by police has been charged with three offences.

Jonathan Lawrence, 28, of Elmore Road, Leyton, appeared at Waltham Forest Magistrates' Court today (Thursday) accused of GBH, possessing a firearm and ammunition.

He was arrested following another shooting, which took place in Abbotts Park Road, Leyton, at about 2.15am on Saturday July 18.

Two men became involved in an argument and another two men subsequently joined the dispute.

A 29-year-old man was shot in the street following the argument and left the scene on foot.

He was taken to Whipps Cross University Hospital and is in a stable condition.

Witnesses heard several shots being fired and called police.

Officers from the CO19 specialist firearms unit stopped Mr Lawrence in Elmore Road at about 2.40am on the same morning, after he was spotted in a car believed to be linked to the earlier incident.

He was shot before being arrested.

The Director of Professional Standards at the Met and the Independent Police Complaints Commission are looking into the cirumstances under which officers fired shots.

Lawrence was remanded in custody.
