THE League of Friends at Whipps Cross University Hospital has put out a desperate call for new members.

The League, which celebrated its 55th birthday in June and raises funds for vital equipment, has dwindled in size from 30 to 13 members and will drop again to about six by October.

Brenda Fone, 70, who is the chair of the League, said: “We need able-bodied and young people. Our members start in their late 60s and our president is in her 90s.

“We just want to carry on.”

The League raises much of its funding by organising regular car boot sales and needs new members to help lift and set up trestle tables.

Terry Vallis, 77, a committee member, added: “We raise money for lots of different things.

“If there's a surgeon that needs something and he or she can't get it through the NHS, the request comes to us.”

Established in June 1954, the League has raised millions of pounds over the years, including £50,000 for the hospital's maternity unit and £35,000 for a new CT scanner.

Mrs Fone said: “If it weren't for the League of Friends, the hospital would be in a right old state in terms of equipment.

“We don't want the League to die off.”

The League was forced to stop holding its annual fête more than five years ago and is in danger of having to stop holding car boot sales by October if membership does not pick up.

Mr Vallis said: “It's for the equipment the NHS can't supply through its budget. Some of it is very small but very expensive.”

A spokeswoman for the hospital trust said: "Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust fully supports the League of Friends and encourages people of all ages to become involved with them.

"The hard work, commitment and contribution of the League is invaluable to the Trust and we are very grateful for all their efforts and donations."
