THE council spent an extra £7m making the borough's streets more attractive last year.

More than £45.5m was poured into the public realm department, which is part of the environment portfolio.

The cash has gone on the borough's Wipe Out Enviro Crime campaign, and other measures to brighten up the borough, such as on flowers and hanging baskets.

Conservative deputy group leader Michael Lewis said he was in favour of the measures to tackle flytipping and the attempts to brighten up the borough.

He added however that sometimes the authority places too much emphasis on issuing fines for small offences, such as littering, rather than cleaning up big flytipping.
