FUNDING has been secured for a training centre to help apprentices into Olympic construction jobs.

Doubts were raised over whether the near £6million grant from the Learning and Skills Council(LSC)for the centre in Cathall Road, Leyton, would be approved while the LSC reviewed its finances, but today it has been announced that it has been given the go-ahead.

The National Skills Academy will train up to 5,000 people, mostly through appreticeships, for Olympic jobs and other major construction projects such as Thameslink, Heathrow East and Crossrail.

It is intended to help tackle the rise in unemployment and to address a construction skills shortage in the borough.

The Cathall Road site, owned by energy company and Olympic sponsor EDF, is leased to the council on a long-term, temporary basis.
