Police have been called to South Thames College in Wandsworth after students became involved in a brawl with staff this afternoon.

Police initially said one person had been arrested following the incident at the Wandsworth High Street campus but that later turned out not to be the case.

According to police, staff made an emergency call this afternoon after a number of students started fighting with staff inside the college.

Officers are still thought to be at the scene now.

A police spokesman said: “There was an emergency call to the police.

"It was from staff at the college. A group of students inside the college were fighting with the staff there.

"There has been one arrest made.”

The spokesman added that as the incident was still ongoing they were unable to release any further information at present.

But a statement from South Thames College said it had been a 'minor incident' involving only one student and one member of staff.

"South Thames College can confirm that a minor incident took place on Thursday, September 24, at the college’s Wandsworth campus," the statement says.

"This was between a student and a member of staff. There were no weapons involved and it was quickly dealt with.

"The college prides itself on being a safe environment and our recent Ofsted inspection complimented the College on its 'safe, respectful and inclusive environment'.

"The college does not tolerate disruptive behaviour and has systems in place to prevent and deal with it.

"We continue to review and monitor the effectiveness of our procedures in order to ensure the safety of both our learners and our staff, so they have a positive experience of life at the college."

Police had been at the site earlier today operating security arches to detect wepaons on students entering th college.

It is unclear how this afternoon’s incident started.
