EPPING: 'Brawl' nightclub licence hearing underway

A HEARING into the licence of nightclub One9Five has got underway.

Councillors are considering whether or not to continue with the suspension of its licence following a mass brawl outside its premises last weekend.

The meeting has currently stopped for a 30 minute break while more evidence is reviewed, and is set to continue again at 3pm.

There are also indications that CCTV footage of the fighting will be shown, however officers of the police and council are currently discussing whether to ban the public and press from seeing it.

"however officers of the police and council are currently discussing whether to ban the public and press from seeing it." - About right, don't let the press and the public see how bad the brawl actually was!

Were you there then?

More likely the police don't want the public to know how long it took them to arrive at the scene.

Use your brain for once. There is a police investigation going on and the CCTV images are evidence for a possible prosecution. Allowing the press and public to see them could hinder the investigation or prejudice a trial. The only thing that is in the public interest at the moment is that this place is shut down immediately and permanently. We don't need to see video footage to know how bad the situation has got.

I agree, Kate always seems to speak before engaging brain and should consider the points mentioned by Hickey and Debenight.

Debdenite, I think you will find out that a group of men were ejected from Club Edge, they attacked some men in Cottis Lane, these men made a phone call and within a few minutes their friends arrived in a van and all hell broke out. There was no trouble inside the 195 and because of this I fully expect them to have their license reinstated at today's council hearing.

Precisely - any public viewing of the CCTV evidence could prejudice any future criminal proceedings with the possible result that those involved could be acquitted as a result of this evidence having been made available for viewing by members of the public. In my view there is no need for the video footage to be shown to the public, there is enough evidence to suggest the licence should be taken away

Dedenite is spot on people, the investigation is still ongoing and any future suspect identity parades could be scuppered if members of the public and press saw those involves.

The defence would jump all over the fact that their clients image was shown on video to the public before any I.D procedure was carried out. It's like showing a picture of the suspects to the witness before the viewing procedure, it would be inadmissible and totally wrong !!!

If it is the case that there was no trouble at Club 195, then why is there CCTV evidence from the club in relation to the riot? Why did the police request a suspension of the licence, after an exhaustive process of interventions over the past 12 months? Of course there is a link between the mass violence and Club 195.

The CCTV evidence (from 195's own cameras) will show that the perpetrators of this trouble left Club Edge.

Yes there has been trouble, but most of it happens outside and is relatively minor. When it does happen outside and a call is made to the police it gets logged as being called to the 195 regardless of wether the people involved came from the 195 or Club Edge. 1

What happened last saturday week was appalling, but why should people lose their jobs or the vast majority who go out for a fun night suffer because of a few idiots.

Maybe you set the bar higher than I do when it comes to when the authorities should act against a licensed premises. Have you read the article about the previous police interventions and the scale of the problems? The police have in their report stated that the door staff refuse to co-operate with them on violence in and outside the club. Just on that basis, I think the licensee should lose his licence as he is obviously part of the problem. If Club Edge is also a problem, it should be shut down. Perhaps that is next on the list. I think everyone should be allowed to have a fun night out and drink as much as they want and it is the duty of the police to ensure that fun is safe and not a nuisance. No-one is calling for all licensed premises to be shut down because not every pub and club in the area has these problems as they are better run.

As I have previously said on this it has no importance where these people came from. Maybe they stopped at the kebab shop on the way - does this mean they should be held responsible?

That is a ridiculous comment.

Well please explain Keefie, your previous posts dont explain what you mean. I really dont see how one club can be held responsible over another because the people were there first?

Is it? When they arrive by taxi then by your logic the cab operating company is responsible!

Completely understand how people are feeling right now, the incident was very serious but in this case I am on Club 195's side.

I do believe that yes, if the Club was removed then the problem would go away but people such as myself who just fancy a good dance in a local club without spending £30 on cabs every weekend, would yet again suffer for the sake of these 'out of town' cowboys!!

Can honestly say that me and my friends have always had a good time down there and the staff are absolutely lovely. Would be sad for them to suffer too and loose their jobs as they don't deserve it!!
