WANSTEAD: New Tesco Express to open within weeks

A NEW Tesco Express could open in Wanstead High Street within weeks after the store cleared its final planning hurdle.

Opponents of the plan to open the new outlet on the site of the former Woolworths won a temporary reprieve when the council turned down an application to create a loading bay directly in front of it.

But the supermarket giant now claims this problem will be resolved by making deliveries via Grosvenor Road instead - clearing the way for work to finally begin on the new store.

A Tesco spokeswoman said the site, which has lain empty for ten months, would take little time to refit - meaning it could be open for use within as little as a month.

The news was met with disappointment by Ashley Gunstock, of Cranbourne Avenue, Wanstead, who led an unsuccessful attempt to challenge the council's decision to grant the store an alcohol licence.

He said: "This is sad news, but at least there is a small mercy in the fact that they were not able to scar the High Street with a loading bay.

"This might mean they won't be able to deliver quite so many goods via the back entrance - making it harder for them to sell as much.

"Hopefully this will help out local small traders a little bit.

"We will be keeping a close eye on what happens at the store when it opens."

Tesco has also come into conflict with Redbridge Council over its plans to open a superstore in Highams Park - which the authority fears could have a negative impact on trade in nearby South Woodford.

Waltham Forest Council will make a decision on the application tomorrow (Tuesday).

A Tesco spokeswoman said that no date had yet been set for the new store to be opened and that the firm had a zero tolerance policy towards under-age drinking.

Oh well, bye-bye all the great independent shops in Wanstead, as all the idiots flock to Tesco thinking they're saving money (hint: look at the small print, dullards - the 'cheap' prices Tesco advertise only apply to the giant stores, not the little Express or Metro ones. Anyway, I suppose Tesco will use its usual tactic of price flexing (which is also illegal) to undercut the butcher and greengrocer in order to put them out of business. Sad times. I'm proud to say I've never set foot in Wanstead's Starbucks (I wouldn't want their watered down, overpriced crap anyway). I'll never set foot in Tesco, either. www.tescopoly.org.

Yes, I agree with the Gus. Bye bye over priced Somerfield, bye bye overpriced Londis. Bye bye overpiced Boots. Let's just go back to weekly markets rather than having a high street. **** these multinationals, **** them...............u
ntil you need some milk after 10.30pm or until you fancy a quiet coffee without being surrounded by yummy mummies and their monstrous children eating GI Gluten Free pastries hand made by Bolivian octogenarians whilst Daddy reads the Guardian telling him not to shop at Tesco, man.

Get a life. Wanstead needs a Tesco to stop the daylight robbery that occurrs on the highstreet everyday.

You get a life. Clearly you know nothing. You have no arguement - just a load of pathetic, second hand comments that your tiny brain thinks are funny. Sadly, Tesco will probably succeed because idiots like you will take what you're given, go there and pay way over the odds.

I know the High Street and being on a budget would always choose a Tesco express than a local shop as the food is always fresh and they do buy 2 get one free and other special offers and as for Guy Tovind, why are you cutting your nose to spite your face? If you do like your coffee stronger the ladies in Starbuck always will make the coffee stronger or give you an extra tea bag without further cost. Are people just jealous because Tesco are successful and do people really want rubbish shops like Hoe Street or closed down shops like the Deli in Orford Road? I try to buy local but the sausages in Orford Road are nearly 3 times as much as Tesco's basic ones and are ok to eat and quite tasty if you need a quick snack. Wanstead High street is a posh area but have down to earth shops which I am pleased about because it is a safer area to shop that Hoe Street and Orford Road. There is still a killer and rapist on the loose and many people are concerned for this reason alone may I say.

I cannot organise my shopping habits any better. I work from 6am until 10pm 6 days a week. I really don't feel like shopping on my day off. Ergo, there's a gap in the market that Tesco are going to fill. If the independent supermarkets (sic) stayed open later, i would patronise them instead.

sorry, but thats your problem, i work 75-80 hrs a week too, and if i have to shop on my day off, thats what i have to do., and as for hoister vestry you new incarnation will also soon be suspended along with all the others

I know it's my problem, and I'm grateful for Tesco helping me solve it. I really don't see how you can take issue with me for that. I don't know what you people want. You want shops, but only if they are indenpently run, you want coffee but only if it's from somewhere "cool" you want to be ripped off and you want to shop when your told. YOU are the customer YOU are right. If the other shops on the high street understood this then maybe your campaign the stop Tesco would carry more weight. As it is, every little really does help.

you are correct to a point, but Tesco's have a history of closing down all the competition around them, with regard to coffee, i prefer my own made from my own machine.

My problem with them, ( and all the others sainsbury's etc ) is that they vacated the high streets years ago,( to large out of town sites ) which left many a town centre a ghost town
.the small independant grocers opened up and worked 24/7 to serve local customers, only for the supermarkets to wipe them out , when they opened their extra express stores

just think that they are morally wrong

Morally wrong how? They don't owe anyone a living, they're in business.
I'm quite sure the greasy spoon cafe's had the same issue when all the deli's opened. Did anyone complain then? doubt it.

i missed this earlier.

Gus, my comments are not second hand or intended to be funny.

I find it odd that in both your comments you have lowered yourself to name calling and yet you say I have a small brain.

I will go to Tesco if I need to and if they're competitive. However, i don't think the coucil have allowed Tesco to install the tractor beam and my tiny brain is capable of deciding to go somewhere else if i feel i'm being "ripped off"

Yeah but that's just the point - you won't go elsewhere. Like I said, people like you take what you're given. That's what Tesco rely on - unquestioning customers. Regarding your ill-informed denial of Tesco being 'morally wrong' - where do I start??? Take a trip to www.tescopoly.org and open your eyes. And for someone bleating about all the time they have to spend at work, you certainly spend a lot of time here!

If the best you can do is make pointless personal attacks that are frankly laughable then it's no wonder nobody listens or cares about your point of view. Thank goodness for Tesco! Better than a police station or allnight nightclub, every strip of shops locally has now got one to save us from those nasty petty shopkeepers, CCTV council parking money-grabbers and community minded do-gooders. Roll on, Eoin Dardis; carry on believing your corporate bilge, moving onto your next acquisition to ride roughshod over another group of pointless protesters. Isn't this great, Britain? No longer a nation of shopkeepers; now just a legacy of corporate greed. And special offer this week, 2 for the price of 1! Vote with your feet if you actually care; but thousands of neighbours won't unfortunately. ho-hum.

No, but i don't like Budgens. They're a cancer on the high street. Overpriced, poor quality produce and very limited lines invading every London High street and putting smaller businesses in the gutter, just ask the independent supoermarket owner, i did. Blockbuster is ok though.

Normally I don’t comment on these things as it is very pointless however after reading through what has been said here I feel I have to say a few things.
How is Tesco going to ruin the high street we already have one supermarket with Summerfield’s which Tesco will sell pretty much the same items as. Which considering the level of customer service you get at Summerfield’s and the prices will hopefully mean I never have to enter Summerfield’s again.
As for the other stores it’s an express so there will be no pharmacy so that nice locally owned boots will stay open, they won’t have a full meat counter so the way way way over priced butchers that no one is ever in will be fine although I have no idea how they stay open as it is. There will not be a cafe so the ma and pa coffee shop Starbucks will continue to make money, they won’t have many magazines and greeting cards so Bennets will be fine. I don’t think Tesco express sells cooked Chinese food, fish and chips, pizza or kebabs so they will all be ok and you can still eat all the fried food that screams traditional Wanstead.
The only other shop who has a problem is Londis, oh no not my local favourite the shop my family have been going to for generations the very non national franchise where the store policy says never clean the shop and sell fireworks to anyone who looks like they were born before yesterday.
Just get over the Tesco hating yes they are not the most wonderful cuddly eco friendly company in the world but they are not the worst by far and yes it does mean that maybe you will have longer hours to shop so the people who work long hours can go there and its is ridiculous to say that’s there problem because someone has to do those jobs. I myself work 6 days a week and on my day off I don’t want to get out of bed let alone spend hours queuing in Summerfield’s and believe me when I say you want me doing the job I do.
So if you don’t want to shop at Tesco don’t but let the people who do want to do so without calling them idiots because let’s face it when you stuck one day and you need something and only Tesco is open you will go in there and be grateful its open (if you live in the area and if you don’t then you have no say anyway).
