EPPING FOREST: Hundreds turn out to remembrance services

HUNDREDS of people have been paying their respects to those past and present who have died fighting for the British armed forces at a series of remembrance events across the district.

Ceremonies in Epping, Loughton, Chigwell and most villages in the area attracted large crowds, despite the threat of rain from stormy clouds looming overhead.

Among those paying tribute were dozens of war veterans, politicians, police, army cadets, residents and families personally touched by losses on the battlefield.

The Loughton Ceremony was marred by the inappropriate comments by Rev.Geoffrey Smith. Many of those there listened in disbelief to what he said. To hi-jack such an event for his own political agenda was disgusting and disrespectful to all.

Would disagree with Familiar. I think his (Rev. Smith) words echoed the sentiments of the vast majority of people there. I think the ceremony was moreso marred by those people who decided to shout out across the crowd. Judging by the 'looks' these people were given, I think they were in a blatantly clear minority.

Sleuthy what are you talking about his comments were totally unnecessary, what he commented on didn't happen the individual made up the whole story about being kidnapped and having a knife held to his throat. Also 'the looks these people we're given' were in agreemenet. I take it you wasn't there......

I was there. In my opinion it was the yelling which marred the occasion. Whether you agreed with him or not or whether what he said was right or not, it was certainly not the time nor place to start yelling over the heads of the veterans who were standing right in front of them.
