A FORMER Tory councillor has gone on trial charged with corruption.

Suresh Kumar, of Eastern Avenue, Ilford, has appeared at Southwark Crown Court accused of demanding a £10,000 donation from property developers who wanted planning consent to build a block of flats.

The 44-year-old, who represented Valentines ward, denies three counts of corruption alleged to have taken place between November 11 and December 12, 2004.

He is also charged with perverting the course of justice relating to an earlier trial - which he also denies.

The trial continues.
