THE council will post details of exact CCTV enforcement car locations on its website under an innovative new scheme which a leading councillor says will improve road safety.

The borough uses six vehicles mounted with cameras to catch people committing moving traffic offences, such as stopping in box junctions.

Although a list of common CCTV car hotspots are listed on the council's website, the new scheme, launched later this year, will go one better in revealing the exact locations and times of the cars. The information will be updated on the site on a weekly basis.

Waltham Forest is believed to be the first council in the country to tell people exactly where its enforcement cars are.

Cabinet member Cllr Bob Belam said: “The aim is to make it safer for everyone, and also to keep the traffic moving because when somebody sits in a yellow box the traffic can tailback a long way.”

Cllr Belam added that the aim of the council's policy is “not to make money at the expense of motorists.”

“If everybody drove correctly and parked correctly there would be no income,” he said.
