A MONTH-long initiative to help people suffering from a language disability known as aphasia will be carried out this month by a team based at Whipps Cross Hospital.

Speak About Aphasia Month has been organised by Waltham Forest Speech and Language Therapy Service. The aim is to raise awareness of the disability and the services available to local people and their carers.

About a quarter of a million people in the UK have aphasia, a language disability usually caused by a stroke or head injury.

Sufferers may have difficulty speaking, understanding, reading and writing.

Problems can range from a slight difficulty remembering names or filling out forms to a complete loss of speech and understanding but the team stresses that the disability affects people's language, not their intelligence.

The team will be providing assessment, advice, therapy and support for people with aphasia and their carers, and has links with local self-help groups in Chingford and Walthamstow.

Anyone requiring more information on the service can contact the Speech and Language Therapy Department at the hospital on 020 8535 6795.
