THE reopening of a South Woodford Christian bookshop has been delayed by a planning issue, it has been revealed.

Wesley Owen Books and Music was taken over by the Nationwide Christian Trust (NCT) but may not be able to reopen as quickly as it was hoped after it was discovered permission may be needed to put up a new sign.

The shop was at the centre of a campaign to keep it running after charity IBS STL, which ran the chain, went into administration at the end of last year.

Following the takeover, it will trade as Living Oasis, along with up to 20 other Wesley Owen shops across the UK.

Reverend Andy Twilley, director of Christian life and ministry at the NCT, said: “We're in further discussions with planners to see what can be done – at the end of the day, it's a bog standard sign.

“It won't have big flashing lights or anything that will detract from the beauty of the high street.”

He added that the shop would not open again before the issues over planning were resolved.

“We're probably not going to do anything in the interim – we don't want something that looks half-cocked,” Rev Twilley said.

It was revealed last week that the shop had officially passed into the NCT's hands and had been expected to reopen in a matter of weeks.

Rev Twilley confirmed the funds raised by churchgoers and customers, which totalled about £40,000, will go towards restocking and developing the South Woodford store.

He said: “It will be used in the development of the shop and reopening under our vision.

“There's a massive amount to do and we're keen to get it done as quickly as possible.”

At a meeting last week, it was suggested the shop become a “centre for mission”, hosting youth groups, prayer meetings and community events.

Rev Twilley also confirmed former Wesley Owen staff would be asked to reapply for their jobs in anticipation of the store's reopening.

Speaking at last week's meeting, former manager Dominic Stinchcombe said: "Wesley Owen left a legacy and it's up to us to build on that legacy.

"I'm hopeful for the future. Nationwide Christian Trust have the resources to get us started."

It is expected that stock will be similar, although Rev Twilley said there would be some consolidation of products on offer.

The NCT is also eventually planning to look for larger premises in South Woodford to accommodate a coffee shop, lounge and children's area.
