A LEYTONSTONE artist has created a unique free exhibition featuring creative talent from Waltham Forest and beyond.
Carne Griffiths, of Forest Road, in Leytonstone, invited 100 artists to buy one of 100 sq ft display spaces for £25, which will be brought together to form a grid.
The exhibition, entitled 100sqft, will feature the work of established artists as well as people who simply enjoy getting creative.
The 36-year-old illustration graduate said: “I advertised the concept through the Arts Council and the feedback has been really positive.
“I don't judge any of the work at all. The whole concept is that any artists can take part, or those who don't consider themselves an artist at all.”
He continued: “One of the strange things is whether or not some of the work actually works better in the grid alongside each other. Seeing the 10ft high grid has a lot of impact. It fills the room.”
The grid includes an oil painting by Mr Griffiths and a lino cut by his wife, Claire, alongside a wide-variety of photographs, graphic designs, still life drawings and multimedia work.
The exhibition will also feature a print entitled “Stone Sculptures” by Anna Alcock, an artist who is part of the Inky Cuttlefish print-making studios and art gallery in Blackhorse Lane, Walthamstow.
The 33-year-old, of Ritchings Avenue, in Walthamstow, said: “I made my piece specifically for the exhibition. It was an unusual to size to work with because I don't usually work with a square canvass or in that size, so it gave me a new challenge.
“I think it is wonderful that it is open to anyone. I have looked at some of the work, which looks really good, so it has not been detrimental to the exhibition - it just means there has been a wide variety.
“I hope this encourages more local people to take part next time.”
This is the second 100sqft exhibition Mr Griffiths has organised and he says he hopes to make it a regular event, which will showcase more artists from the borough.
Several submissions from the exhibition are currently on display at Leytonstone Library, in Church Street, Leytonstone.
The free exhibition opens from March 1 to 6, at the Chomley Boys Club, in Boleyn Road, Dalston.
