THE DEAD bodies of more than 40 birds have been found at a popular beauty spot.

Shocked residents called the police after making the grim discovery at Alexandra Lake on Wanstead Flats yesterday (Tuesday).

No information has yet been given about the species affected - but the site is known to be home to a large number of geese, ducks and other wildfowl.

The Guardian has been told that some of the dead birds were seen falling out of trees.

The body of a dog is also thought to have been found at the scene, in Aldersbrook Road.

The pond has been cordoned off while tests are carried out, but no reason has so far been given for the deaths.

Residents on the nearby Aldersbrook Estate have told the Guardian they fear the creatures may have been poisoned.
