WOODFORD GREEN: Physics professor visits school

PUPILS at two of the area's secondary schools were treated to a lecture by one of the world's foremost experts on particle physics this afternoon.

Professor Philip Burrows, who is a senior research fellow in accelerator physics at Jesus College, Oxford, visited Woodbridge High School in Woodford Green today (March 12), where he addressed year 11 pupils and sixth formers, as well as visiting pupils from Wanstead High School.

Professor Burrows spoke to the pupils for nearly an hour, giving them an insight – albeit, a somewhat simplified one – into the world of particle physics.

Formerly something confined to the insides of laboratories in centres of learning, particle physics has become more and more visible to the general public with the media coverage of the recent experiments conducted Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland.

This not least because of some suggestions that the process of colliding sub-atomic particles would results in the end of the universe. So far, such fears have proved unfounded.
