REDBRIDGE: Warning over bogus medicine collections

PATIENTS are being warned about a bogus group which is asking for any unwanted medicines.

NHS Redbridge has issued a warning about a group of fraudsters trying to collect unused drugs, and said that this represents a potentially dangerous scam.

The group has distributed flyers to hundreds of homes around the borough saying:

"Don’t throw your unwanted medicines, they can save lives. Please give your unwanted medicines for the less fortunate in the Third World."

It then goes on to ask people to put the medicines in a bag and leave them outside their front door for collection on a specified date.

People with any concerns or questions on the scam or on the disposal of medicines should speak to their GP or local pharmacist.

Alternatively, contact NHS Redbridge’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 0926995 or email them at pals@Redbridge.nhs.uk.

There are also the Bogus Leaflets collecting unwanted clothes. No address or contact number on the leaflet. Allegedly for Charity with no charity number etc. Why is it that these bogus collectors seem to get away scott free?

The worse thing of all is the psychological bogus collectors normally play on peoples guilt. You can be sitting in a restaurant or pub with your partner or friends and a pretty lady comes in with roses and in a flash mentions 'christmas, easter, dying kids, cancer' whilst waving a rose and you either look tight fisted in front of your company or emotionally are forced to give. I however start questioning their validity and authority. They normally put the forged ID round their neck into your face (Which should actually be an authority from the local Police Station but if you press them further, they normally start to make insults and swear. Always follow them outside. You will often see them being picked up by their dodgy looking boyfriend in a flashy car. Another good get out is to ask for an address of the Charity and say you will send a large cheque from your Company chequeBook but do not have it with you. they rarely offer an address, even on the promise of a large donation. they just want cash for drugs usually.

Will we have to wait to hear of a death resulting from drugs left on doorsteps before the cops decide to charge someone for issuing leaflets encouraging this dangerous game? Solicitation for and illegal possession of, 'prescription' drugs, is a criminal offence!
