IN the run-up to one of the most important dates for local government, the council elections, members of the Youth Parliament paid a visit to the Town Hall.

As want-to-be councillors got ready to fight for a seat in Redbridge's council chamber and serving councillors got ready to defend their position the Mayor of Redbridge Charles Elliman invited the four teenagers on a tour of Redbridge's building of power.

Speaking about the visit he said: "They wanted to know how the council system worked, and how the mayorality in Redbridge worked and how we were elected.

"I took them to see the council chamber and they were absolutely bowled over. The first time I went in there I was speechless."

And while the four Redbrigde students, Ameera Ramdany, Aamerah Patel, Gaurat Sailapal and Benjamin Caine, got to see the inner machinery of the council the youngsters did already know something about the elections, as they had to face the vote when they were chosen to represent the borough in the UK Youth Parliament.
