PEOPLE in Wanstead and Woodford who want to preserve their green and pleasant places are urging the next cabinet to accept changes to the Local Development Framework (LDF).

Green campaigners wanting to safeguard the future of green spaces in the area want a phrase changed in the new LDF, a legally binding document which will set the agenda for the future development of Redbridge.

Members of the public were outraged last year when two phrases were included in two vital clauses, which should have protected open spaces.

But instead of totally vetoing development on green land an in "very special circumstances" sub-clause was inserted, which would allow building on the open spaces.

The cabinet then ignored suggestions by the cross-party working group to change the phrase.

But the new phrasing, again drawn up by the cross-party working group, will if accepted give extra protection to open spaces as the offending clause would be removed.

And now it is up to the new cabinet if the changes are adopted.

Billie Figg of the Wanstead Society, who lives in The Avenue, Wanstead, said: "If this model is accepted the protection of the green spaces will be much greater."
