TREES for all and all for trees, is the motto for children helping to provide Waltham Forest with woodlands.

Schools in the borough, including St Helen's Catholic Infants School in Walthamstow, have been planting trees for a Woodland Trust campaign.

The trust is the UK's leading woodland conservation charity, and it is urging schools to agree to plant a hedgerow or copse in their grounds.

Native broad-leaved species are being planted at the schools.

These varieties are hoped to continue growing well into the next century.

Paul Bunton of the Woodland Trust said: "Even schools with quite small grounds will often be able to accommodate one of our hedge or copse packs which can inspire children to get in touch with nature and learn about the ecology of these wonderful habitats."

Planting and using a hedge or copse also contributes to Key Stage 2 teaching in science, numeracy, literacy, art and design.

Other schools around the UK are taking part in the scheme.

The Woodland Trust looks after 1,000 sites in the country and access to the sites is free.
