CAMBRIDGE University Centre of Cricketing Excellence batsman Zoheb Sharif has raced into the lead for the new Walter Lawrence Trophy award, made to the highest-scoring batsman from the six MCC universities.

Sharif, the 23-year-old left-handed batsman from Leytonstone, scored an unbeaten 140 out of 249 in Cambridge UCCE's match against Northamptonshire at Fenner's on April 28.

It was the highest score in an innings played against one of the other five University Centres of Cricketing Excellence or against one of the first-class counties so far this season.

Sharif made his debut for Essex as an 18-year-old and went on to make four championship appearances before being released at the end of the 2004 season.

Despite his efforts, Sharif was unable to prevent a 193-runs defeat for his side.

The winner of the Walter Lawrence Trophy will receive a silver medallion and a prize of £1,000.
