Ilford Colts 3
Winchmore Hill 1
(Ches't Lge Cup U12)

COLTS arrived in fine style on an open-top double-decker bus, touring through Waltham Abbey, Loughton, Buckhurst Hill and Chigwell, to celebrate becoming League Champions and hoping to complete the double by winning the League Cup as well.

The game kicked off and the first ten minutes proved to be very scrappy with neither team stamping any authority on the play. With rain falling, conditions were difficult.

Winchmore Hill drew first blood after they had won a corner.

It was cleared back to the corner taker and after taking one touch he whipped the ball back in and found the corner of the net through a ruck of players.

Colts needed to step up a gear and start to play some football.

They didn't disappoint and the remaining twenty minutes proved to be their best play of the game.

Colts camped themselves in Winchmore's half and with chances falling to Matthews and Cressey, Colts were going close.

An own goal actually got them back into the game.

The ball bounced around in the box before Ryan McCall had a shot that hit a couple of bodies before ending up in the net. The second half started like the first, quite scrappy. Gradually Colts started to impose themselves.

The second goal would be the most important goal, and came from the impressive Day.

The ball worked its way through the midfield before dropping to Potton who floated an inviting ball through to Day who took his time, let the ball drop and smashed in a low, hard shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Colts had appeared to have done the hard work, but Winchmore Hill responded well and for periods had Colts on the back foot.

Winchmore Hill created three or four chances and had a series of corners, but could not find the equaliser.

Colts' back four had an outstanding match and always stood firm against anything that was thrown against them.

The all-important third goal came from a free kick to Winchmore Hill near the corner flag.

As the ball was floated over, a header looked on target, until Ferris somehow kept it out for another corner. Everybody from the Winchmore Hill team came up for the corner.

Even the goalkeeper stood on the halfway line as the last line of defence.

The corner came over and was cleared.

The ball fell to Matthews in his own half of the pitch. He turned and realised that as the goalkeeper was still running back to his goal he had a clear run from one end of the pitch to the other.

As he approached the other penalty area he turned, composed himself and slotted the ball past the keeper into the bottom corner.

He ran away to celebrate knowing that Colts had clinched the League and League Cup double. The squad of Colts players whIch grabbed the double were George Russell, Russell Goldstein, Taylor Mills, Daniel Jones, Jake Cuthbert, Mitchell Potton, Billy Osborne, Taylor McLaughlin, Kashan Ryan McCall, Daniel Day, Jack Matthews, Charlie Ferris, Oliver Thorpe and Billy Cressey.
