WOODFORD against Wanstead is a local derby, but the game that took place between the U17s on Sunday had an added twist as both sides were determined to finish the season on a high, writes Ben Lloyd.

Woodford's determination was only seen in glimpses in the opening period but they still managed to score early through Callum Abbot and then went further ahead thanks to a back orientated try from centre Stephen Henry.

Before the half was out Wanstead came back with a penalty and Woodford responded quickly with a try from William Evans on the overlap to give a half time score line of 15-3 to Woodford.

After some changes early in the second half, Woodford seemed to step up a gear.

Good hands from the backline left Zomar Sindhu with a one on one with the added task of the full back looming to cover.

A good chip and chase from Zomar Sindhu, seemed too far away but the winger burnt everyone for pace to dive on the ball over the Wanstead line.

Woodford went on to string together brilliant back plays from solid forward platforms, one of which provided them with the chance to go 22 points clear.

A good ball from scrum half Ben Lloyd, gave Tom Morgan the opportunity to draw and pass, leaving Ed Watts with a two on one.

Watts seemed to have been stopped but a brilliant offload to Fiaz Khan saw him cruise over between the posts, making Tom Morgan's job of converting a painless task.

The home side continued the top class interplay straight from the kick-off.

In the end the pressure told, and Ed Watts smashed over the line.

The visitors took advantage of Woodford's premature celebrations to sneak a consolation try before the end of the game.

Woodford U17's thank Alex Russell, Micky Peacock and Roger Watts for their efforts.

There were thanks also to Charlie Simpson and Kenny Peacock.
