TONY ROBERTS saved an injury- time penalty to ensure Dagenham finish the season by ending Cambridge United's five-month unbeaten home run.

Cambridge, who were relegated from the Football League last year, had not lost at the Abbey Stadium for 12 games.

But goals from Chris Moore and Paul Benson, coupled with Courtney Pitt's last-gasp penalty miss, meant that run came to an end.

Daggers boss John Still said: "It wasn't just the fact we won that pleased me, but also the manner of the victory. Sometimes you feel that you nick a result away from home but that certainly wasn't the case today and we fully deserved the three points. We scored a re-taken penalty to go into a 1-0 lead, which I thought was very harsh on their goalkeeper.

"But we showed good character to regain the lead after they pegged us back and then Tony Roberts saved a penalty.

"Given the injuries we've had this year, I think we've done unbelievably to finish where we have and a tenth place finish is higher than last season.

"That's progress and hopefully we can continue the progress next year."

After a lacklustre first half, Dagenham picked up the pace and moved into the lead on 55 minutes when Paul Benson was fouled by Michael Morrison in the box.

Home keeper Scott Howie saved Chris Moore's spot kick, but the referee ordered it to be taken again and this time Moore made no mistake. Cambridge hit back four minutes later when former Leyton Orient defender Mark Peters nodded home from John Brady's corner, but Dagenham scored a second ten minutes from time.

Benson reacted well to nod home from five yards after Moore's initial header from Danny Foster's cross appeared to be going wide.

There was still time for Roberts to make himself the hero, blocking Pitt's penalty in the third minute of stoppage time to seal Dagenham's victory.
