ELECTION night in Waltham Forest saw Labour continue to hold more seats than any other party.

The new council is made up of 26 Labour, 19 Liberal Democrat and 15 Conservative councillors.

Each of the party leaders kept their seats but there were a few big surprises as longstanding councillors and cabinet members were voted out.

Overall, the Labour party lost one seat to the Lib Dems.

But the Tories suffered the biggest blow of the night- losing three key seats in one ward to the Lib Dems.

After weeks of heavy campaigning, the front and back bench councillors looked tense and uneasy at the count in Walthamstow Assembly Hall.

Two recounts were ordered in wards where the closest fights took place- Highams Park and Hale End and Leyton.

The battle drew to a close at 5.20am.
