WALTHAM Forest's Spitfires Basketball Club have been awarded the task of selecting a borough representative squad of youth players to take part in the forthcoming London Heathrow Youth Games to be held at Crystal Palace.

The club's coach Trevor Griffiths will be drawing up a shortlist of players for the Waltham Forest team, following trials to be held shortly. The invitation goes out to all players living in Waltham Forest, who were born on or after September 1 1989, to make contact with Trevor, in the first instance, by e-mailing Coachtrevor @hotmail.com He said: "Players should register their interest in representing Waltham Forest as a coach or a player.

"The trials will be challenging and pre-Heathrow Games matches have been arranged."

The course will be held between May 31 and June 1.

It will take place at Lammas School private playing field, Seymour Road, Leyton.

The Leyton FC player development programme has been developed to improve young players' football skills.

On the course youngsters will learn or improve a range of aspects of their game.

The areas covered on the course will include passing, ball control, heading, running with the ball, turning, shooting, positional play, laws of the game and developing the right attitude to play competitive soccer (player code of conduct).

Each day will include a small-sided game.

All children will have the opportunity of improving their game and have fun in a safe environment.

Boys and girls between the ages of five to 14, of all abilities, are welcome.

Coaches are FA qualified, specialists in coaching primary school children.

Costs for two days will be £20; one day £10.

All Players will receive a medal and certificate on completion of the two-day course. Players should bring a packed lunch, football boots or trainers, waterproof jacket and a hand towel, if the weather is wet.

WEST HAM United Football in the Community also has a Whitsun soccer course for young players, boys and girls, taking place at the Metropolitan Police Sports Ground, Chigwell. This will be held daily, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, from Tuesday May 30 through to Friday June 2.
