A FORMER England rugby union star has visited Haven House Children's Hospice to show his support for its work.

Jason Leonard, who played for the national side 114 times - winning the World Cup in 2003 - stopped by the centre in Woodford Green High Road after hearing about it through a friend.

The 41-year-old, who also played for the British and Irish Lions, is due to host a charity event later this year to raise much-needed funds for the hospice - which provides care and support for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Jane Steward, of Haven House, said: "It's Children's Hospice Week this week and England former rugby union prop Jason Leonard visited Haven House to show his support for the work that children's hospices do.

"This was Jason's first visit to Haven House and he was shown around by chief executive, Ian Sparks and Director of Care, Christine Twomey.

"Parents, children and staff were delighted to see him and Jason spent time chatting and playing with the children."

Ms Twomey said: "The parents really appreciated the special time that Jason spent with their children.

"One of the children he met has recently had surgery and mum said her son experienced his best day in months.

"Jason's genuine ability to communicate on a personal level with the children and their families was fantastic."

Parent, Aiza Alim said: "It was great to see that someone as lovely as Jason had taken the time out to support Haven House. We are very grateful to him for bringing much-needed attention to such a wonderful place."
