ELDERLY people are being targeted in a scam where they are tricked by bogus policemen into leaving their bank cards on their doorstep.

Waltham Forest Police are investigating after two reports where a con-man contacts the victim by telephone pretending to be a police officer.

The victim is told they've been the victim of bank fraud and are told to leave their bank cards on the doorstep.

They are advised not to tell anyone because police are conducting undercover enquiries and cannot be allowed to be seen.

The thief then arrives at the victim's door and swipes the card.

Police advise anyone who has fallen victim to this scam to contact their bank as quickly as possible.

A police spokeswoman said: "We urge residents to be extra vigilant. These callers are bogus and police would never ask anyone to leave valuable property on their doorstep.

"Never give out any of your bank details over the phone if you are not sure the caller is genuine.

"Check that the caller is legitimate by calling your bank directly or visiting your local branch."
