POLICE are cracking down on gang crime in response to a recent increase in gang-related violence in the borough.

Waltham Forest Police has introduced a unit specifically aimed at gang suppression, named Operation Magnet.

The unit conducted five early morning drug raids at addresses in Melon Road, in Leytonstone, on May 20, supported by the Territorial Support Group and Dogs Support Unit.

A police spokeswoman said that as a result of the searches, five men were arrested for offences including handling stolen goods, possession of drugs with intent to supply, money laundering and firearms offences.

A 19-year-old man was cautioned for possession of cannabis.

Three people, two of whom are juveniles, have been bailed to return to police at a later date.

A 17-year-old man has been charged with possession with intent to supply of Class A and Class B drugs and money laundering.

Detective Sergeant Pender from Waltham Forest Police said: "For those who still choose to engage in gang activity, Operation Magnet will seek to identify those involved and remove their capacity to offend."
