YOUNGSTERS will benefit from cash seized from criminals.

The Waltham Forest Islamic Association (WFIA), which controls Jamia Masjid Ghousia, also known as Lea Bridge Road Mosque in Leyton, has been handed £835 from a police fund created from convicts’ assets. WFIA will buy much-needed sports equipment for a youth club based at the mosque.

Tariq Hussein, WFIA head of youth projects, said: “This is fantastic. The group has been running five-a-side football and the equipment we have at the moment isn't very good so it is much appreciated.

“We have been working on other projects with the police, fire brigade and NHS, opening up the mosque for everyone and building a stronger relationship with the community.”

Mr Hussein, who works for a Metropolitan Police unit providing specialist protection for diplomatic residencies in London, said he is also hoping to use some of the money to set up a weekend boxing club.

The funding was organised by PC Steven MacDonald, Waltham Forest faith community liaison officer.

He said: “This funding will give these youngsters the chance to do sports and other activities in a safe environment.

“It's good that property taken from criminals has been recycled into something positive for the local community.”
