OBJECTIONS have been raised against a proposal to revamp a boarded up building in Wanstead High Street.

Ahmed Rafeeq has applied to Redbridge Council for permission for a two-storey building comprising two ground floor shop units with basements.

Permission was granted in March for a two-storey building comprising two ground floor shop units but the plan is to add a basement area for storage for the shops.

Mr Rafeeq, of Aldersbrook Road, registered the latest application, for 46-48, High Street, with the authority on May 25.

The building, next to Russells Bistro Bar, currently appears vacant and has blue fencing outside the front of the property.

Two residents living in flats next door have lodged objections Elaine Murphy claimed the proposed entrance to the southern side of the building would "invade our privacy and also has security risks as the people entering the proposed flat would have to use our entrance on our property".

A second resident at the flats next door said the application raised issues over access to the flat.

Chartered surveyor Andrew Wernick has registered numerous objections on behalf of the Wanstead Society.

The society, which has 345 members in the community, argues that the application is "ambiguous and of poor design/materials, and certainly not worthy of the Wanstead Village Conservation Area".

A similar application, but without the basement storage area, was refused in November last year.

Redbridge Council will make a decision at a later date.
