EPPING FOREST: Boy hit in road crash "serious but stable"

A BOY who was hit by a car near Epping on Wednesday has been transferred to a specialist children's hospital.

The boy, who police first said was six but is now known to be seven, was hit by a green Toyota Yaris when he was crossing Common Road, near the junction with the B181 in Broadley Common at about 12.15pm.

A neighbour said the boy was in the road for about an hour and a half before an air ambulance took him to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

A police spokesman said the boy had been transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in central London, where his condition is serious but stable.

The boy's neighbour, who gave his name only as Mr Howard, said that although he had not witnessed the accident, his wife had been in the back garden and had not heard breaks screeching.

“The police said that the car was going at a normal speed,” he added. “There were four or five police cars here, two paramedics and the air ambulance. The road was shut for four hours or more, until about 6.30pm.

“It is a busy road and motorbikes go down at about 100mph, but most cars do about 40 plus.”

Police are investigating the crash and witnesses should call Chigwell roads policing unit on 0300 3334444.
