A BMW driver who crashed into a lamppost this morning was fleeing police at the time, it has emerged.

The 27-year-old motorist was driving down Hoe Street, Walthamstow, at around 6am this morning, when he failed to stop for a police vehicle.

A short pursuit commenced up Hoe Street and ended when the BMW hit a lamppost.

The driver was taken to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, although his injuries are now not believed to be serious.

A police spokesman confirmed the man had also been placed under arrest.

The road was shut for around six hours this morning while police carried out a forensic investigation of the scene, but it has now reopened.

Just as well there were no pedestrians or cyclists around. I wonder what triggered this chase? If it was a serious crime, such as a robbery, the usual response is to get a police helicopter to track the vehicle's progress. If this was triggered by some more minor incident then it seems like another case of the police acting like testosterone-driven boy racers themselves. The Bill is off the telly, lads, get over it!

Sam Hain & sensibility, Chingford: The question to you two is do you also bemoan the police for not catching criminals too? Unfortunately the guys can't with with the likes of you can they.

Of course the police have to chase criminals - the very fact that the car was fleeing from them suggests that they ahd someinthing to hide.

It was 6am so there were unlikely to be too many pedestrians around and 'm sure they used good judgement.

Leave them alone and let them do their job - exactly what they did in this case

Totally agree Havering, if he had stopped then their wouldn't have been a chase and therefore no accident.

Firstly, the story says it was a short pursuit. There probably wasn't time to firstly get the helicopter involved, secondly get a stinger equiped vehicle ahead of the pursuit to deploy, and thirdly, how can it be said that police officers act like boy racers, when WPC's drive police vehicles also, and all drivers are trained to handle vehicles at speed, unlike the numpty who failed to stop.......

Not all police drivers are trained to high standards- it may have just been a normal patrol car which tried to stop the car. A traffic officer would be highly trained but the coppers you see in the diesel astras are just as bad as the rest of us when it comes to driving cars. Trouble is people watch pursuits on tv and expect helicopters, interceptors, stingers, and the rest of it but I suppose the actual reality here is that a plod got suspicious, put the blue lights on, and beemer boy booted it and stacked it straight off, probably very little in the way of a 'pursuit'. What I can't understand though is why the road was shut for six hours!!!
