REDBRIDGE: Community centre hosts International Jewish event

A JEWISH centre in the borough hosted teenagers from New York and Jerusalem for a week-long delegation.

Jewish Care’s Redbridge Jewish Community Centre (RJCC) in Woodford Bridge Road, Clayhall, hosted the first international teen delegation.

It brought together Jewish youngsters from community centres in Staten Island, New York, and Pisgat Ze’ev, Jerusalem.

For the first time the 29 teenagers from all three cities spent a week together learning and seeing the sights of London.

The youngsters aged between 14 and 17 took part in workshops to improve and develop their leadership skills.

Yael Malul, from Jerusalem said: “It was both fun and a real learning experience. I made some great new friends but also think I got a taste of what it means to be a leader.’”

The Shutafim programme (which means ‘partnership’ in Hebrew) is funded by the UJA Federation of New York and the Jewish Agency as well as being supported by the Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation.

Naomi Shaanan, one of the organisers of the teen delegation, said: “We are proud to be part of this inspiring programme.

"The idea behind the tri-partnership is to link Jewish communities around the world in order to learn more from each other and deepen our Jewish roots and heritage.

"This first delegation has been a great success and we look forward to further developing the relationship between the three centres.”

Jewish Care is the largest health and social care charity for the UK’s Jewish community, caring for more than 7,000 people every week.

The charity runs 70 centres and specialist services throughout London and the South-East.
