LOUGHTON: Family pay tribute to bus crash victim

THE family of an elderly pedestrian who died after a collision with a double decker bus have said life won't be the same without him.

Walter Morris, 76, from Loughton, died three days after he was struck by a number 20 bus as he apparently used the pedestrian crossing outside Homebase, in Church Hill, Loughton.

A statement released today from the family reads: “Our wonderful dad was taken away from us so tragically. Words cannot express the deep sorrow and sense of loss we feel. He adored his children and doted on his grandchildren. He was very proud of us all.

“He was affectionately known as "Wally with the trolley" as he used to work as a trolley man at the local Sainsbury's store a few years ago. He will be sorely missed by many people.

“So many people have passed on their sincere wishes and can't believe what has happened. He was looking forward to visiting his eldest daughter who lives in Cyprus, and was concerned that it wouldn't be hot enough in September. He was a "sun god" always sitting in his little front garden the moment a few rays appeared. People have said it won't be the same without him, and it certainly won't. We all have many cherished memories of him.

“There are so many people to thank but the family would like to say a special thanks to two wonderful women who were at the scene.

“Jackie Potter who supported the family and helped liaise with the police and other authorities following the collision.

“And Angie from Newsbox, where Walter had gone to get his morning paper, who after hearing the impact rushed over and was by our dad’s side holding his hand and comforting him.

“Our gratitude to them is immense.”

Since Mr Morris's death on August 23, calls have been made to improve the junction with Rectory Lane, with one resident labelling it a death trap.

A 42-year-old man from NW London has been arrested and bailed in relation to the incident.
