POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an 11-year-old girl was attacked on her way to school.

The victim was waiting for a bus in Leyton High Road, near the underground station, on Wednesday (September 15) at 8.25am.

A man grabbed her and pushed her to the ground.

He tried to take her phone but was thwarted when a number of people came to her aid.

The man then jumped over a fence and ran off.

He is described as black, aged 25 to 30, wearing grey baggy jeans and a baseball cap which was white and gold with New York written on it.

He also had a tattoo of a black dragon on the back of his right hand.

Detective Constable Claude Gillham said: "We know that members of the public kindly came to the aid of the young victim.

"They may also have witnessed the incident take place.

"We would like them to come forward to give us any information that will assist us with this investigation"
