A MAN who stabbed a tourist to death during an argument over money has been sentenced to life in prison.

Kelvin Francis, 26, was attacked outside Captain Fish and Chip Shop in Walthamstow High Street by fellow Grenadian Daniel Smith on March 7.

Smith stabbed Mr Francis in the neck during an argument over £50 and a Blackberry phone and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith’s girlfriend, Lisa Donegan, of Wood Green, admitted perverting the course of justice and will be sentenced at a later date.

Mr Francis was staying with his killer, Donegan and another man in Clapton during a one-month trip to London.

The victim had paid upfront for the accomodation but decided to leave early because he was unhappy with the sleeping arrangements.

He was angry when Smith refused to return his money and took the Blackberry belonging to Donegan.

Smith and Mr Francis arranged to meet later that day to exchange the phone for the money.

But an argument broke, culminating in Smith stabbing Mr Francis in the neck.

Donegan later hid her boyfriend at her mother’s address in Hackney and was arrested as she tried to dispose of Smith’s blood-stained clothing.

Investigating officer Det Insp Andrew Kelly said: "This incident illustrates once again the deadly consequences of young men carrying knives with violent intent.

“I would like to pay tribute to the dignity of Kelvin's family, particularly his father Elvin Francis, who travelled to the UK from Grenada for the trial and who has been present throughout.

“After the verdict Elvin told me: 'losing Kelvin has left a scar across my heart'.

“I hope this conviction will provide some comfort to Kelvin's family."
