HUNDREDS of pounds was raised for injured soldiers during a fun day.

The event on Saturday at the 126-year-old Conservative Club in Church Lane, Walthamstow, featured abseiling, wet sponge throwing and a memorabilia auction hosted by former Millwall footballer Terry Hurlock.

A total of £800 was raised for the Help the Heroes charity.

Steven Reed, club president and former Marine, said the highlight of the day was seeing 76-year-old Joan Kerns abseiling.

He added: “It all went very well – next year we will host it in July, when the weather should be a bit better.

“The highlight for me was our 76-year-old abseiler. She just cracked on and did it no trouble.”
