A BUSINESS executive has been awarded the CBE for services to the security industry.

Stephen Phipson, 48, of Manor Road, Chigwell, attended Buckingham Palace with his wife Suzanne and two daughters Hannah and Lucy to pick up the award for his work as president of Smiths Detection.

Mr Phipson has for six years run the Watford-based company which manufactures sensors that detect and identify explosives, chemical agents, biohazards, narcotics and contraband.

He has also chaired or played a leading role in a number of industry bodies including the UKTI Security Sector Advisory Group; ADS, the UK security trade association; and RISC, the UK Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers Community.

Mr Phipson said: β€œIt was a tremendous thrill and honour to meet the Queen and collect the award from Her Majesty in person. While I take great personal pride in the award, I also regard it as recognition for Smiths Detection and an industry that plays a key role in protecting our country and its citizens from global terrorist threats.”
