THE owners of a business training firm is at odds with the Government over the repayment of regeneration funds.

Channel 4’s Dispatches programme said The Delta Club, which is based in High Street, Walthamstow, has been asked to repay £380,000 in European Union (EU) grants after it failed to prove it had provided promised training to eastern Europeans.

A spokesman for the Department for Communities and Local Government confirmed it had asked for the return of money paid to the Delta Club for projects in 2006 and 2007.

But Director Samee Mian and consultant Shaukat Khan insist the organisation has not been ordered to repay any cash and the training was delivered.

They say the Government did ask for further information about an EU grant given to the London East Ethnic Business Association (LEEBA), where the pair are also directors.

Mr Mian admitted that he had been unable to supply the information as some vital documents were destroyed in a flood and others were stolen during a burglary.

Mr Mian also claimed a former member of staff has refused to hand over information.

He said: “We haven't done anything wrong.

“The grants we've received were for projects and programmes which have been delivered.

Mr Khan was sentenced to a year in jail after being found guilty of forging cheques and stealing money intended for community projects in Nottingham 20 years ago.

During the programme, aired last Monday (November 15), he was confronted in St Andrew’s Road, Leytonstone, by reporter Deborah Davies over the EU projects.

When asked about the conviction by the Guardian, Mr Khan said: “That is all in the past now”.

Mr Khan claims to have held dozens of senior posts with local business organisations and voluntary groups.

On his website a list of his current responsibilities includes director of finance at Age Concern Waltham Forest (ACWF).

However, Sheena Dunbar, ACWF chief executive said: “Mr Khan has never been director of finance.

“He was a board member and honorary treasurer but never had a hands-on role with our finances.

“A couple of weeks ago we had to perform due diligence with all our board members relating to NHS contracts and discovered for the first time about Shaukat Khan’s background.

“At that point we had a discussion and he stood down from the board.”
