THE COUNCIL spent more than twice as much on CCTV as two of its neighbouring authorities combined over the last three years, it has emerged.

Information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch, shows that Redbridge spent £2,048,000 on installing and maintaining CCTV cameras between 2007 and 2010.

By contrast, Waltham Forest spent £858,858 in the same period, while Epping Forest District Council paid out just £156,874.

According to the report's authors, Newham Council did not respond to the request for information.

The figures do not include money spent on CCTV cars.

In December last year, Big Brother Watch found the borough had one of the highest levels of CCTV cameras per person in the city – 2.8 for every thousand residents – with just Wandsworth operating more.

The Guardian has asked Redbridge Council for a response.
