A GROUP of Leyton Orient footballers brought some festive cheer to sick children when they visited Whipps Cross Hospital's Acorn ward.

Seven players and accompanying staff signed autographs and handed out goodie packs to the youngsters during the trip to the Leytonstone hospital on Tuesday, December 21.

O’s striker Scott McGleish said: “It’s very important that we make visits like these.

"I’m a dad myself and I couldn’t think of anything worse than your child spending Christmas in hospital.

"If we can come and give a few gifts and brighten them up for a while, then it’s time when they’re not concentrating on lying in a hospital bed.”

Assistant manager Kevin Nugent said: “The players enjoy visiting the children at their local hospital, especially at this time of year.

"We are a local club and if this gesture can help brighten up a young child’s day then it’s been a success.”

Eileen Elms, head of nursing for paediatrics, said: "The children and their families were thrilled to see the players and get their photographs taken with them and receive the presents, along with a few members of our staff.

"It is always a pleasure to welcome the players here each year.

"It certainly cheers the children up and we are very grateful to the players that come and spend time with us."
