POLICE are warning shoppers about pickpockets operating in a busy shopping centre.

There were reports of thefts in Selbourne Walk shopping centre in Walthamstow on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

A purse was taken from an open bag and a handbag was stolen from the back of a pushchair.

A purse was also stolen from a woman's pocket and another purse was stolen from a velcro fastened pocket on the back of a pushchair.

The thefts come in the same week a thief stole hundreds of pounds from a bank account after tricking shopper Patricia Monksfield, 55, of Parkstone Road, at a cashpoint in High Street, Walthamstow.

The thief stole £400 from her account on December 23. Her bank has since reimbursed her money.

A police spokeswoman said: “In the past two days there have been a number of reports of thefts from Selbourne Walk.

“Pickpockets do operate in the area and a few simple steps can discourage the most determined pickpockets.

"Call police immediately on 999 if you are being targeted or see a crime being committed.”

Police advised the following:

- Keep bag straps over the shoulder and hold bags in front of you.

- Make sure bags are fastened and purses or wallets are deep inside bags or coat pockets.

- Be aware of who is around you, including when you are in a queue at the checkout, or whether anyone is paying you particular attention or getting too close.

- Do not leave your bag unattended over the handles of a pushchair or inside a shopping trolley.
